A garage door installation can be a complicated procedure, so it is usually best to have a professional handle it for you. At Doorcare, we are happy to inform our clients about how garage doors are installed, and we always encourage enlisting professional help to ensure the installation is done safely and correctly.
How to Install a Garage Door
Depending on the type of garage door being installed, the opening system, and the structure of the home, installation methods can vary. Because the most common type of garage door in North America is the articulating overhead garage door, understanding the general procedure for this type can be helpful.
The steps to install an overhead garage door are as follows:
1. Measure Everything
Before anything else, measure the width and height of the opening, the headroom (overhead space), and the backroom. Ensure the floor is level, as uneven concrete can affect door alignment and performance.
2. Order the Parts
Once measurements are confirmed, order the appropriate garage door and required components, including tracks, springs, hardware, and the opening mechanism. Consulting a garage door professional, like the team at Doorcare, helps ensure you select the correct door and compatible parts for your home.
3. Set the Garage Door in the Track
Some garage doors are installed panel by panel, while others arrive as a single unit. For sectional doors, the bottom panel is positioned first, leveled, and secured before stacking and hinging additional panels. Tracks are positioned alongside the panels as installation progresses. For single-unit doors, the full door is placed first and tracks are secured accordingly.
4. Install the Track
Installing the track is one of the most critical steps. Tracks must be perfectly level, plumb, and spaced correctly to ensure smooth door movement. The track should hold the door snugly against the weatherstripping without creating excessive pressure. Use manufacturer-recommended fasteners to secure the track to the wall and ceiling framing.
5. Set Up the Torsion Springs and Bars
Torsion spring systems vary by manufacturer and door type. Most overhead garage doors use a torsion bar and spring mounted above the opening. These springs must be installed and tensioned according to manufacturer specifications. Because torsion springs are under high tension, this step should only be handled by trained professionals to prevent injury.
6. Install the Garage Door Opener
The garage door opener is mounted to the ceiling, typically secured to a centre joist or structural support. It connects to the door using a rail system, chain, belt, or screw drive. Follow the opener manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure proper alignment, wiring, and safety sensor installation.
