The dangers of unbalanced garage doors

A garage door is quite a complicated and intricate piece of machinery. The system itself has many moving parts, literally and figuratively of course. And it’s important to know that if any of these parts breaks, fails or stops working efficiently, it could be a serious danger risk.

Today, we’ll look at how an unbalanced garage door can start off as a small problem, but grow into a larger, more detrimental one over time if left unattended. Here are four  things to look for to be able to tell if your garage door is unbalanced and is in need of attention.

  1. If your garage door looks uneven, it probably is. Take a look at when it is opening or closing. If you notice that it’s not even, or is crooked, then something is definitely wrong and needs attention right away. It might not seem like a big deal but it is. There could be a few things that are causing this problem such as worn or broken torsion spring, or a frayed spring cable on either side.
  2. If you have to open your garage door manually and it starts to close by itself, then something is obviously amiss. Make sure you practice caution when looking for the problem, and also make sure that no one is left unattended or unsupervised while the door is open since it might close unexpected.
  3. Noises can be a great indication that something is not right with your garage door. Sure, your garage door makes noise when opening or closing, however you’ll know if it’s making a “strange” noise. This could be an indication that a spring or cable is not working properly and needs attention, or something is wrong with the motor itself.
  4. Of course, if you garage door simply doesn’t open there’s obviously a problem. It could be as simple as a battery issue, but it could also be something more. Take a look or call a professional to help assess the situation.

So Why Is An Unbalanced Garage Door Dangerous?

Well, the biggest danger of course is having the garage door suddenly fail and fall on top of someone or something like your car or bicycle. Obviously the former is more dangerous than the latter, but a damaged car is no picnic and can cost a lot of money to repair. So if it’s a problem with a spring or cable that could suddenly snap, it’s important to get it fixed right away. It’s also very dangerous to try to fix a damaged torsion spring if you don’t know what you are doing or don’t have the right tools. If you’re ever in doubt, please don’t hesitate to call professionals who can come in and help assess and fix the problem immediately for you.
