Safely Dealing with Common Garage Door Issues

Garage doors, even when they’re functioning at their best, still pose a safety risk if used improperly. In the case of a malfunctioning or broken garage door, these can be even more dangerous as their behavior becomes more unpredictable. Whether you’re moving into a new house or have lived in a residence for years, it helps to inform all family members of how to safely navigate the garage and use the garage door.

First of all, for your own personal safety as well as the safety of your entire family, you should never attempt to repair certain parts of your garage door or try to fix certain garage door issues. For example, if you haven’t worked with wires before, you should not attempt to make any electrical repairs, as this could result in dangerous and possibly fatal electrical shocks. You should also never try to remove larger springs from your garage door because these have a lot of tension. If the springs launch from the door and get loose anywhere in the garage, these could lead to injury. If you don’t understand the basics on how a garage door functions or its individual components, you’re better off calling a professional garage door repair company to fix the problem instead.

Next, you should make sure that your children stay away from parts and components of the garage door, especially electrical ones and especially when the garage door is having issues. Young children can accidentally drop a remote opener or press buttons and break the garage door entirely, necessitating a call to a repair company. Don’t let your children open or close the garage door manually either, as this could lead to personal injury.

When the time comes and your children are older, you should teach your children how the garage door properly functions in case that they ever have to use it in an emergency situation. Teach them which buttons to press to open and close the garage door using the remote and how to access the door’s rolling-code if applicable. This code changes on its own every time that you access it to reduce the chances of theft. You should also know how to use the emergency release that every garage door has, and you should teach your older children about how this works too.

You should also consider purchasing a garage door opener with photoelectric eye beam technology. This allows the garage door to “see” what is going on in the garage so that your door won’t ever come crashing down when someone is beneath it. This also prevents the door from accidentally slamming down on your car while you’re pulling out of the garage, which would be an expensive incident. Of course, if the garage door is malfunctioning, you should not hesitate to call a repair company as this photoelectric eye technology may be comprised.

If you and your family happen to be leaving the house for a period of time, such as on vacation or another trip, you should not leave the garage door opener plugged in and ready to go. Instead, unhook the opener to prevent outside access to the garage door while you’re gone. You may also want to look into getting a vacation lock console security switch to disable the functioning of the opener with no risk of failure.

You also want to make sure that you promote the safety of your entire family with proper garage door usage. For example, never leave your garage door open, even if it’s just only partially ajar. Even if you plan on using the garage again and are out in the backyard, you never know who could gain access to your garage while you’re not looking. If you can access your home through your garage, this is especially dangerous as a burglar can now get into your home relatively easily.

That also means that you shouldn’t carelessly leave the garage door remote in plain view or within easy access. You may want to keep the remote inside the garage or even in the house when not in use. It’s not wise to place the remote in your car, for a burglar can break into your vehicle and then gain access to the opener and thus possibly your house. Consider installing rolling-code technology so that you can only access your garage door through specialized codes.

Garage doors provide a safety barrier to the garage itself, where you may store tools, park your car, or use as a recreational space. By following the above tips, you and your entire family can safely use the garage door without any unfortunate incidents.
