No matter where you live, the importance of a secure home never changes. While many people focus on the security of their home’s entry doors, quite a few overlook the importance of a secure garage.
Believe it or not, you may be inviting a burglar into your home without even realizing it. Your garage door is one of the main points of entry, so experienced burglars are always going to start here.
If you are making any of the mistakes below, the chance of a break-in is much higher:
1. The door is not locked, so anybody can pull it up from the outside. This has nothing to do with the power operation of your garage door. Instead, anybody who wants access can simply grab the handle and lift. This is often times one of the first points of entry that a burglar will check.
Is your garage door locked?
2. Others know your code, or worse yet, you keep this written on the outside keypad. Does it get any dumber than this? While there is nothing wrong with giving your entry code to those you trust, you have to be careful of how often you share this information.
Even more so, you don’t want to write the keypad code on the keypad itself. If you do this, anybody can simply open the cover and access your home.
3. Leaving it open at all times. It may be crazy to some, but a large number of people never close their garage door. They find this to be a hassle. They find it easier to leave the door open at pretty much all times of the day (and night, in some cases).
While you don’t always have to put your door down – such as when you are working outside – you should not get into the habit of leaving it up. In particular, you want to avoid this at night or when you are not home.
If you are making one or more of these mistakes, it is the equivalent of inviting a burglar into your home. Do you really want to take this risk?
It only takes a few minutes to ensure that your garage door is 100 percent secure. If you need any help with this, don’t be shy about contacting a local service company to visit your home and complete a review of your system.
All in all, a secure garage door will help you sleep better at night.
