Basic Garage Door Care for the Everyday Homeowner

Garage-Door-CareMost homes have at least one garage door. That being said, the majority of homeowners don’t know the first thing about maintenance and care. Although this may be the case, you don’t have to struggle to keep your door in good working condition. Instead, there are some basic door care tips that can keep you on the right track.

1. Monthly visual inspection. At least once per month, visually inspect your garage door – inside and out – for any changes. Pay close attention to the cables, door springs, rollers, and mounting hardware. If anything is loose, missing, or out of place, it is time for a repair.

2. Test the reversing mechanism. This is not something you have to do every week, but every month or so you should check the reversing mechanism. It is extremely important that this feature works as it is meant to.

Note: if your garage door is not equipped with an automatic reversing mechanism you should consider replacing your operating system.

3. Annual lubrication. Once a year (or twice) you should apply spray lubricant to the door’s rollers, tracks, and hinges.

As you can see, some garage door maintenance tasks can be completed on your own. However, if you are not comfortable performing these tasks you should contact a trained and knowledgeable technician.

The more time you spend caring for your garage door the longer it will last. In turn, you will not have to spend nearly as much money over the long haul.

If nothing else, remember to “stay on top” of the maintenance required by your garage door. Waiting too long to perform the above tasks could result in damage and in some instances injury.
